In 2019 Michael and Shirley Vesper purchased a 73.3 acre farm located at 2242 Dixon Road in Frederick. Hawkeye Brewery, LLC, was formed in January 2020 to begin the process of opening and operating a farm brewery.
Currently, the farm is being used to grow, harvest, and provide hops to the local area. The 2.5 acre hop farm currently grows a variety of different types of hops, including Comet, Makinac, Michigan Copper, Magnum and Chinook Hops. Last year was the first year we were able to harvest, dry and process the hops into T-90 pellets. It is expected that the harvest for 2022 will be the best yet because 3rd year hops are more mature and are already showing significant growth. This will allow for state breweries, both local and across the state, to produce beer from locally grown hops.
Hawkeye Brewery, LLC, will use the hops from our farm to create beer flavors that will be unique to our brewery. We anticipate that our farm brewery will be open in 2023. Stay tuned!
