FROM MATT BROPHY OF FLYING DOG…
Good afternoon fellow Maryland brewers.
Many of you are likely aware of the partnership between Flying Dog and the University of Maryland and the work being done to support Maryland brewing agriculture.
Over the summer, Flying Dog obtained over 20,000 pounds of malting barley that was grown by UMD at its agriculture research facility in Keedysville. Flying Dog then worked with Copper Fox in Williamsburg to have this barley malted and we have taken delivery of this malt.
It’s our intention to use this malt in some upcoming beer projects, but we also wanted to share it with fellow Maryland brewers.
UMD donated the barley and Flying Dog paid for the malting and transportation. We’re offering it to you for $1.00 per pound, which is about twice what the overall cost (on a per pound basis) was for malting and transportation. Flying Dog will be donating all proceeds back to UMD to cover the costs of replanting and continued research.
Below is a list of malt available. Again, cost is $1.00 per pound with a minimum of 500 lbs (COD and FOB Flying Dog). The minimum can be an assortment. All the malt is packaged in 50-lb bags.
Malt Total Available
Maryland Scala Malt ~6,000 lbs.
Maryland Synergy Malt ~1,800 lbs.
Maryland Synergy Malt (toasted) ~4,000 lbs.
Maryland TePee Malt ~2,500 lbs.
Maryland Eerie Rye Malt ~1,000 lbs.
>> See the analysis for both the raw barley and subsequent malt (no rye analysis).<<
We’ve brewed this year’s Secret Stash Fresh Hop Ale using a blend of these malts and we are very happy with the results (flavor, extract, and lauter-ability).
Inquiries can be directed to me at matt@flyingdogbrewery.com.
Cheers,
Matt
